As one of the largest (80,220 km2) and most impoverished counties of Yushu Prefecture, Zhiduo is home to many remote Tibetan herding communities.  The county seat Zhiduo town serves as a base for many to collect supplies and conduct business.  In addition, Zhiduo town has the only monastery in the county, except for a single satellite monastery in Yaqu village, which serves the various spiritual needs of the population.  While other Tibetan areas have numerous monasteries (often from each of the 4 major sects of Tibetan Buddhism), Zhiduo has a single extremely large monastery of the Gelugpa sect.
